Winter Break Extended in Lahore Schools and Colleges Amid Smog Crisis in response to worsening smog conditions, the Lahore High Court (LHC) has issued a detailed verdict, following a brief order issued the previous day, to extend the winter vacation period.
Justice Shahid Karim of the LHC issued a two-page written order directing the Punjab Education Department to officially announce this extension, which applies to all educational institutions in the region, including schools and colleges.
This decision follows the LHC’s earlier ruling for an additional week of winter holidays as a countermeasure against the increasing smog threat.
The LHC’s latest directives were given during hearings that focused on petitions calling for solutions to the smog crisis.
Earlier, in line with the LHC’s initial directives, the Punjab government had adopted a policy of three weekly off days for schools in Lahore, aiming to alleviate the severe smog’s impact on air quality.
The onset of dense smog in the early winter days is attributed to a mix of factors, including emissions from vehicles and industrial activities, as well as the burning of crop residues.
