X Expands Communication Features with Audio and Video Calls on Android

In a noteworthy update from August 2023, X’s CEO, Linda Yaccarino, revealed the imminent arrival of audio and video call capabilities to the platform. This development aligns with Elon Musk and Linda’s vision to transform X into an all-encompassing app. The company recently secured its 15th money-transmitter license, paving the way for enhanced payment features, enabling users to easily send money to one another. Building upon this, X is now introducing audio and video calls for its Android users, following its earlier launch on iOS in October 2023.

Android users, who have patiently awaited this feature, will need to update their X app to gain access. While all users can receive calls, the ability to make calls is reserved exclusively for X Premium subscribers, a strategic move to attract more subscribers. By limiting outbound calling and offering features like extended posts exclusively to X Premium subscribers, the company aims to bolster its subscription base.

X Premium, priced at $8 per month or $84 annually, contrasts with the $3 per month Basic tier, which includes ads. However, the specific tier granting access to outbound video and audio calling remains undisclosed. X must address questions concerning the inclusion of audio/video calls in each subscription tier. Although the rollout to all Android users may take some time, the feature is expected to become available to all Android clients soon.

Enabling the feature is a straightforward process for both iOS and Android users:

  1. Navigate to Settings.
  2. Click on Privacy and Safety.
  3. Go to Direct Messages.
  4. Enable audio and video calling to toggle the feature on or off.

Users can also manage call permissions, allowing calls only from contacts, followed users, or verified users, providing greater control over their communication experience.
