Punjab’s Revival of Free Wi-Fi Services: PITB’s Latest Initiative

Punjab to Bring Back Free Wi-Fi in Public Areas Soon

After Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz’s announcement, the revival of free Wi-Fi services in public areas in Punjab seems to be underway.

The Punjab Information Technology Board (PITB) has been tasked with executing the project, including the restoration of previous infrastructure, such as hotspots.

The goal is to provide complimentary Wi-Fi access in various public venues, including educational institutions, hospitals, bus stops, and railway stations. Efforts will also be made to identify and establish new hotspot zones to increase Wi-Fi availability for the public.

Previously, the PML-N had introduced free Wi-Fi services in Lahore and other urban centers during its 2013 tenure. However, the service was discontinued by the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) government due to unpaid bills.

Initially, the Pakistan Telecommunication Company Limited (PTCL) was responsible for providing and managing the facility. However, oversight of the free Wi-Fi service in public spaces has now shifted to the PITB.

The expected revival of this service is likely to bring significant benefits to the public, providing internet access in important locations and improving connectivity and communication channels.
