The federal cabinet has granted approval to establish a Joint Investigation Team (JIT) to probe those running social media campaigns.
According to a notification issued in this regard, the JIT will consist of five members at a senior level. Additional Director General of the FIA will head the JIT, while officers from ISI and IB will also be part of the team.
The notification states that PTI officers of grade 20 and NADRA officers are also included in the JIT. It was reported that the approval was obtained through circulation of the Interior Ministry’s summary on Monday.
Sources revealed that the decision to take action against those involved in printing fake ballot papers and instigating propaganda was made.
Sources said that through the condemned social media campaign, attempts were made to change officers’ loyalty by blackmail and intimidation. It is said that the JIT will identify the responsible and include cases against them.
JIT will also recommend preventive measures in the future. Sources said that approval has also been granted to avail the services of IT experts during the investigation.
Sources further said that spreading propaganda against government officers is a violation of Article 5 of the Constitution.
